Scratch League
SCRATCH TALK 2010Category 1 golfers are few and far between at many golf clubs and we at Crow Nest Park are no exception having only 10 with handicaps under 6 and it has to be said several more quality golfers on 6 & 7 this really is a an elite group of golfers.
This year we are competing in the 2nd Division of the HHDUGC Scratch League after securing promotion as runners up to Castlefields GC where we will join Meltham GC, Hebden Bridge GC, Halifax Ogden GC & Saddleworth GC.
An early goal for us was to qualify for the 7th round of the Yorkshire Union Scratch Team Championships at Tankersley Park GC but the team didn't have their best day, only Ben Adamson (73) shooting a steady round. Nathan Scott (85), Steve May (87) & Lewis Howell (87) below par!!!! pardon the pun!
As always members are encouraged to come along to matches and walk round with the players in thier matches for extra support and who knows join us for a drink in the club afterwards and offer your advice!!
We are a small section but proud of our status and strive to uphold the expectations that come with being a Scratch Golfer.
Play Well.
Dean Wilson (Scratch Captain)
We had mixed fortunes in the Union Scratch Foursomes, Ben & Steve May losing out 4&3 to West End 1 at Dewsbury GC, while Chris & Dean won after very tense affair at Longley Park, winning on the 22nd hole against Halifax Ogden 1.
Our first league match saw us struggle as do many!!! at Castlefields GC , only Ben coming out on top 3&1. Dean just losing out on the last whilst Nath, Lewis & Chris struggled to come to terms on the challenging 6 hole course.
Form golfer Nathan continued his ‘purple patch’ with a stunning 66 in the Crow Nest Masters to register the lowest gross so far this season, missing a lengthy putt on the last to break the course record.
The league is turning out to be as tough as expected with points coming quite to tough to secure.
Hebden Bridge away we lost 8-2, Rob the only winner,
Saddleworth away saw Lewis be the only winner, his first for the club.
A good win at home against Leaders Ogden 6-4, Chris, Ben and Rob securing the points.
Slightly disappointing win! Against Castlefields 6-4 again Chris, Ben & Rob getting the points, Dean & smithy losing out.
A reasonably good result away at Meltham saw Rob gain a good win with Chris getting a great half with a tap in birdie at the last!
This leaves us laying 4th in the league with a couple of home games to come where we will hopefully pick up some needed points.
A mention for another great knock by the back to form Ben who shot 42 points in last week’s Stableford. Surely the course record will go soon ?
With Mowly, Ben & Nathan away at the Open it was a weakened side that took on Hebden Bridge but help from Nick Day, Mark Widdop & Duncan saw us secure a fantastic 9-1 win.
I am pleased with an entry of 30 for the scratch open considering we have 9 of our own players away at the “Home of Golf” this week for the open! Many thanks to Paul for his continued effort for this Open for the elite!
Huddersfield golfer Andy Shaw came out on top for the Cup after a creditable 72 in windy conditions closely followed by a posse of home players. Home Player Steve McDonagh won the best net prize with a 66 playing off 3 shots lower than his handicap.
We kept up the good work against Saddleworth, Mowly & Ben walloping their opponents 7&5 whilst Dean & Smithy running out comfortable winners with Nick the only loser.
Good Knocks by Nath & Ben helped us secure promotion to the 1st Division of the Scratch Team Championship in 2011. Smithy & Mowly also getting round well (considering the late night from Captains Day!)
