Welcome to the scratch section 2008

Well our small but talented section of golfers are in the swing at the moment (pardon the pun!) weekly comps with each other (for a small but priceless wager!!!) are helping to hone our games as well as enhancing our team ethic this year which is success on the course, this said we will be striving to do this as a team and not as individuals, the commaraderie in evidence on Thursdays will go a long way to achieving this.

In an attempt to raise our standards we have decided to go for matching golf 'kit' on the course this year for matches and comps and i have to say they do look smart, lets hope our performances match our look!

Thanks to RICHARD HARRISON, JOHN TURNER CONSULTING, BLS CONSULTANTS,

DAVE WADE (past captain), JOHN HAVERSTOCK (present captain),A & G MOTORS,

WHITE ROSE NON-WOVENS and TERRY DAYNES for their support and encouragement in our search for success at CROW NEST PARK.

May i take this opportunity to invite supporters to come along to scratch matches and comps, whether you walk a few holes or the whole match i'm sure we would all appreciate your presence and it just might help (you could always tell us where we went wrong over a drink or two in the bar afterwards!!)

Scratch Team for 2007

John Turner (President)           Phil Widdop (Club Captain 2007)

Duncan Lambert  Steve Gee  Kris Richmond  Tom Holmes

Nathan Scott  Steve Smith  Dean Wilson(Captain)  Rob Gee

H.H.D.U.G.C Scratch Div 3

Not a great start to our 2007 campaign suffering a 8-0 defeat to a much strengthened Halifax team, although there were some good performances by our lads , the blustery conditions obviously suiting the home side, which is the key to success at this level, making  sure you score well on your own course.

We put the disappointment of the previous week's loss to register a great 6-2 win against Queensbury at home with fantastic wins for Dean, Tom and Smithy all winning comfortably. Kris just losing out in a tight game against Union player Karl Smith.

Confidence should be high going into sunday's Scratch team Championships at Willow Valley G.C when 36 holes round the Clifton course will be a true test.

It turned out to be every bit as tough as we thought at Willow Valley, this showed in the now normal high scores!! in these championships. The CSS was 75 which just shows how tough the course played and we must now qualify again next season in  the 2nd Div.

Back at Willow Valley on thursday for the Scratch League we battled out a very   creditable 5-3 loss, Nathan winning on the last and Tom gaining a valuable half.  Smithy and Dean were the losers in tight games.

Hanging Heaton are the visitors to Coach Road this week and hopefully we can  continue the positive attitude going as we are now very thin on the ground with players due to long time No1 player Kris Richmond not re-joining due to personal  reasons, Duncan working away, Steve G out injured after an unfortunate accident with a car door!!!!! and Tim not able to commit due to work commitments i may be  looking to fringe players to step up.

We had a perfect night against Hanging Heaton, registering an 8-0 win to put ourselves back in the mix for the league, comfortable wins for Dean,Smithy and Nath laying the foundations for Rob to finish the job with a win on the last after a great comeback.    It now gives massive importance to the match this week against Halifax on our own course, hopefully we can reverse the drubbing they gave us early in the season.

Not quite the reverse but a good 6-2 nevertheless against Halifax keeps us clearly in 2nd place, after good wins for Dean, Smithy and Nath, Rob just losing out in close a match.

A disappointing 6-2 loss away at Queensbury saw our distant promotion hopes take a nosedive on a wet and miserable night on a soggy course, the ever reliable Smithy being the only winner.

A solid performance at home to Willow Valley puts the Clifton team in relegation trouble          after we beat them 6-2 good wins for Nath, Rob and Smithy puts us in good stead for Hanging Heaton away in our final game.

Not a good way to end the season losing 7-1 to Hanging Heaton but still good enough to secure 2nd place thanks to a point from Nath after his opponent chipped in on the last!

This Years Captains Day was good for the Scratch boys, Smithy winning with a 72 from Rob who was one shot behind in less than favourable conditions, Nath two shots further back in fourth, Dean also won the longest drive with an "absolute monster!"  in a howling wind against.

This season has been a truly great one for the club's category 1 golfers,

Dean Wilson - Singles matchplay champion & Buckwell Trophy winner (with C.Hampson)

Duncan Lambert - Thompson Shield winner & Best gross of the year (67)

Steve Smith - Captains Cup winner, Invitation Day winner,

Steve Gee - Jubilee Pairs winner (with C.Stirk)

Rob Gee - Presidents Cup winner & Scratch Champion

Tom Holmes has recently had a purple patch reducing his Handicap to 3 for the first time, with several sub 70 rounds.

Nathan Scott has played very consistent holding his cat 1 status

Special mentions must go to Mark Widdop Ben Adamson for  great seasons with lots of success as well as sizeable reductions in their handicaps leaving them just outside category 1.

2008 Season

Not the start we wanted to this season in the 7th Division Yorkshire Union as we failed to qualify again for the 6th Division finishing a disappointing 14th out of 24 teams at a very soggy Wath G.C. Dean, Ben, Nath & Smithy all fell below their own high standards to register a combined score of 343.

Nothing short of promotion will do this year in the 3rd division of the H.H.D.U.G.C. when we will be pitched against Hanging Heaton, Todmorden, Saddleworth & Queensbury.
